When I think of true leadership, the first person who comes to mind is Chris Houston. I’ve had the privilege of knowing Chris for more than twelve years, during which he has been my supervisor, mentor, and dear friend. Throughout that time, he has consistently exemplified what authentic leadership looks like and has imparted invaluable lessons—both professionally and personally.
I first met Chris while taking a graduate course in Project Management, where he was substituting for the regular professor. I was immediately impressed by his teaching style, command of the subject, and engaging presence in the classroom. At the time, I was serving as a department chair at a college, and after class, I approached him about joining my faculty. It didn’t take long before Chris became one of the most respected and sought-after professors on our team.
Later, through Chris’s recommendation, I was selected for a position with the TSA where he became my supervisor and mentor. Under his guidance, I learned how to navigate complex challenges, manage difficult personalities with professionalism, and find creative solutions to tough problems. These lessons have had a lasting impact and continue to shape the successful career I enjoy today.
Chris possesses a rare combination of leadership, positivity, and emotional intelligence that naturally draws people to him. One of his defining traits is his ever-present smile—no matter how difficult or frustrating a situation may be, he remains composed and optimistic, always reassuring others that things will get better. Among the many lessons he has taught me, one stands out above the rest: never allow others to control your emotions. To this day, it remains one of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learned.

After more than 30 years in leadership across the military and federal government, I’ve seen too many talented people miss opportunities simply because they weren’t ready when it mattered most. My mission is to change that. I help professionals develop the discipline, confidence, and clarity to lead before they’re given the title — so when opportunity arrives, they’re already equipped to succeed.
